How to Customize the Links You Post On Facebook

I thought I'd share with folks some things about posting links that might not be "common knowledge" for Facebook users.  A little customization might just get a few more people to read the link, share a link or leave a comment on the link's topic. It also gives you the opportunity to have some fun with the headlines!

First, lets take a sample article, say this one: "Perry stays secret on many things, including forensics files". Its about the governor of Texas and his refusal to allow the state to determine if an innocent man was executed or not. At any rate, right click on the link you want to share and copy it.

Next, go to your Facebook page and paste the link into your status window:

Facebook will go to the link and insert it into your status page. Now we can begin to customize the link.

Float your mouse over the title of your link as shown below. Notice how it becomes underlined?

Clicking on this link will open a small window which will allow you to change or modify the title of the link.

Once you've made the changes to the title of the link, click on the white area next to the title to see what your new title looks like, as shown in the picture below.

Isn't that fun? Imagine all the headlines you can change in big or little ways!

Facebook is full of simple tricks like this for customizing what we post, what we link, including videos and music files!

Now the next part of the link that you can modify is the "blurb", which in our example reads "The Dallas Morning News Latest News pages contains . . ." and so forth.

Float your mouse over this part and click on it as well.

A small window will pop open and allow you to either right click and paste some text from the article or simple write your own blurb.

Click on the white part when you're done and if you don't like it, click on the blurb again to make changes.

The changes you've made will show up in the link now.

As you can see, we've now customized our link to speak more clearly to those that might be interested in reading about the topic.

Before you click share, delete the link from the top part of the status window and type your customized message about the link.

Click "Share" and you're all set. If other people click "share" on your posted link, the changes you've made go with the link!

And when your linking Videos and MP3s, you can make simular changes to those links as well!

Here is what the final product looks like:

This technique of customization is also handy when you're posting a PDF or other page that shows a title like http://www.asdf.com/ or some other non-informative information. Happy posting and see you on FB!
